Academic Position   Neil J Hewitt is a Full Professor of Energy at the University of Ulster (UK). He teaches energy management, energy policy and energy systems in the School of the Built Environment and in the School of Engineering at both degree and Master degree level.  He is Director of the Centre for Sustainable Technologies, the University’s energy research centre with over 40 staff and PhD students.  He is also Head of the Research Graduate School of the Faculty of Art, Design & Built Environment and is responsible for the management of the PhD cohort within this faculty.

Other information   He is a graduate of the Ulster Polytechnic (BSc 2.1 Hons Combined Sciences, 1985) and a PhD from the University of Ulster (Alternative Refrigeration Systems, 1990).  Six years of post-doctoral research followed before becoming and lecturer in Energy in 1996 at the University of Ulster.  He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005.  He was promoted to Professor of Energy in 2007.  He has presented at international conferences globally (Abu Dhabi, Brazil, Canada, China, Europe, Japan Korea etc.) and has over 100 refereed journal papers.

Research focus  He has published a wide range of energy related journal papers including carbon capture and storage, energy systems analysis, biomass, energy storage, heat pumps and advanced building energy conservation systems.  He had attracted almost £10M of energy research funding from sources such as EPSRC, EU and other sources. He is a regular project reviewer for the EU, UK and other government’s research funding bodies.  He is also a regular journal paper reviewer and sits on the editorial board of a number of journals.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Ambient Energy.
